Particle traps are used for integrative sampling of large volumes of water over longer periods of time in environmental monitoring projects and provide a cost-effective and efficient means of sampling suspended solids. They thus provide a good basis for monitoring measures in water bodies or plants.

In contrast to simple random sampling, integrating methods are particularly suitable for the representative recording of daily and weekly water quality variances that cannot be represented by a single sampling. It is the only way to detect illicit discharges and shock loads.

Controlled sampling of representative water volumes at monitoring stations and with the deployment of multiple particle traps in the water body (cross and depth profile) will allow for more reliable data which, when supplemented with discharge data, can be used for balancing and load calculations.

The robust and contamination-free stainless steel design eliminates cross-contamination during sampling. The polished inner surfaces prevent extensive adhesion of particles or biofilm growth and facilitate the sampling process enormously. Draining can be performed by vacuum aspiration or via direct pouring.

Due to the special optimization for sampling small and light particles with specific densities even below 1 g/cm³, this sedimentation box also captures suspended particles that could not be sampled with previous passive samplers. The collection rates of this design are improved and have been first validated by laboratory experiments as part of the BMBF joint project RUSEKU.
