Automatically sampling road runoff from a rain event from the first drop to the last in situ is possible with the sampling basket in any standard storm drain.
With the aim of capturing tyre and road wear particles from road runoff a sampling basket for standard road gullys was developed, together with GKD and Ori.
It allows to fractionally sample a rainfall event directly in the gully. (lower separation limit ≤10μm). The development was initially carried out virtually by creating different geometries and simulation models in order to find the ideal flow guidance on the one hand and on the other hand the fractionation of the collected particles.
Subsequently, the most promising design was implemented in GKD's filter construction workshop at GKD.
Underneath the sampling basket, an explosion-proof measuring ORI measuring technology was developed, which records the flow rate data and transmits it wirelessly via GPRS.
The function of the sampling basket was tested under defined conditions at the test stand (Chair of Urban Water Management of the TU Berlin).
